- Waste as a Resource / Industrial Symbiosis
Our mission is to advance technology to decarbonize chemical manufacturing. Our vision is to enable a future where the chemicals we use everyday are recycled from waste emissions instead of made from fossil fuels.
Chemical manufacturing and plastics production creates large volumes of CO2 due to the production and burning of fossil fuels for high temperature processes. Despite the increased renewable electricity, it is very difficult to electrify conventional process and reduce emissions.
We have developed an electrochemical technology that converts CO2, a greenhouse gas, into basic chemicals such as ethylene, which can be converted into common plastics. Our process consumes 3 tonnes of CO2 for every tonne of ethylene produced, giving us the potential to create carbon neutral or even carbon negative chemicals and plastics. We also provide a pathway towards recycling of plastics - incinerated plastics are converted to CO2, which we could capture and reform into their basic building blocks.
We want to greatly reduce the amount of GHG emissions associated with the production of useful chemicals and plastics. We believe that our technology has the potential to eliminate over 1 GT of annual emissions.
Canada’s progress toward a circular economy is dependent on the support given to business who embrace these essential principles.
